Speaking to Iranian Television on 12/04/2026, Esmaeil Baqaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman said:
“It has been about 24 to 25 hours, meaning since yesterday morning, when indirect talks began through a Pakistani mediator, with messages exchanged between the two sides, and the process has continued uninterrupted until now. Discussions went on throughout the night, covering a range of topics, including those raised in our 10-point proposal as well as points made by the other side. In reality, we reached understandings on several issues, but on two or three important matters, the views were far apart, and ultimately these discussions did not lead to an agreement. Diplomacy never ends. Diplomacy is always a tool for securing and safeguarding national interests, and diplomats must do their duty in all circumstances, whether in wartime or peacetime. Now, there are a few points to consider. First, this round of negotiations took place after forty-odd days, forty days of imposed war, and just a few days after the ceasefire, in an atmosphere filled not only with distrust but also with suspicion and ill feeling. The American side, together with the Zionist regime, has committed an act of military aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran for the second time in nine months. Therefore, it was only natural that we never expected from the beginning to reach an agreement in a single session. I don’t think anyone had such an expectation, even though I mentioned that this session was the longest we’ve had in the past year. Another point to consider is the complexity of the subjects and the complexity of the conditions. Some of the new subjects this time were added to the negotiation topics, such as the Strait of Hormuz or the region. These have their own conditions, characteristics, and requirements, but I think that in any case, we must, in all circumstances, act as diplomats and as the diplomatic apparatus, pursuing our national interests, using various tools for the protection of the security, rights, and interests of the Iranian people. The efforts of Pakistan in recent weeks, and especially these past two or three days, are commendable. We thank them for their gracious hospitality. We are confident that contacts and consultations between the Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan, and our other friends in the region will continue. Diplomacy, alongside other components of the government, alongside our good people, and alongside the defenders of the nation, is ready for all kinds of cooperation and all kinds of sacrifice to safeguard the interests and national security of the country.”
